Geisinger Health System is an integrated health services organization widely recognized for its innovative use of the electronic health record, and the development of innovative care models such as ProvenHealth Navigator® and ProvenCare®.  As the nation’s largest rural health services organization, Geisinger serves more than 2.6 million residents throughout 44 counties in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. The health system and the health plan have repeatedly garnered national accolades for integration, quality and service. In addition to fulfilling its patient care mission, Geisinger has a long-standing commitment to medical education, research and community service. 

One of Geisinger’s innovations early in the development of electronic medical records was the implementation of a patient portal.  As Geisinger rolled out the electronic medical record across all of its primary care clinics, it also understood that the patient’s need for information is just as important as that of a clinician.  Starting with basic information about clinic visits, 100 common lab results and the ability for the patient to message the provider, MyGeisinger now has 40% of active patients using this portal with 75,000 unique log-ins a month.  Now, patients have access to thousands of lab and diagnostic test results, OpenNotes and appointment scheduling.  MyGeisinger also has become the focal point for collecting patient-reported data to assist with clinic visits and follow-ups as well as overall population health.  The portal’s mobile app is designed to help patients conveniently manage their health.

In keeping with Geisinger’s commitment to innovation, Geisinger recently launched its Institute for Advanced Application to support the implementation of emerging technologies, data analytic strategies and system engineering solutions to improve healthcare.  Geisinger also leverages new engagement technologies such as a system-wide text message program for appointment reminders and clinical needs, a robust social business platform (called “OurGeisinger Exchange”) to drive collaboration across Geisinger’s 19,000-plus employee base  and a strong social media presence to bring Geisinger news and health and wellness information to the communities it serves.
